Heart Follows Head

My 9 year-old niece asks:

Help, please help me!!! I don’t know what to choose from art, piano, or both. I want to take both but it’s hard. So can you help me, and non of you can say “you just have to follow your heart”. I NEEEEEEEEED HHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

I choose piano. Here is why.

First, playing piano IS an art, so if you learn piano, you’ll be learning art too!

Second, you can learn a lot about drawing and painting by practicing all by yourself wherever you are, but to learn the piano well you really need a teacher and a class. You won’t always have a teacher and a class to learn piano, so you should take the opportunity whenever you can.

Third, learning to play piano means that you’ll need to train both of your hands to do different things at the SAME TIME! This is HARD! But not as hard as when you are older – when you are older it will be almost IMPOSSIBLE! I should know. I never learned piano when I was young, and I had a heck of a time trying to learn when I became a grownup. ARGH!

So, I say, learn the piano and appreciate every minute of it – even when you are doing boring practice. If you stick with it, you will know how to do something very unique and beautiful.

But also, never stop drawing. Or painting. Or watching the world around you. Then you will always be doing art too. You know what? I do art all the time. Even when I’m just on a dumb old bus.

Love, Uncle Pete
